Heineken Facebook App Promotes Selfish Gift-Giving

Heineken’s latest Facebook app, the “BeerFriender,” capitalizes on people’s gift-giving tendencies during the holiday season. Essentially it’s a social commerce app designed to sell the BeerTender, a product that lets you serve Heineken on tap at home. As the video explains, however, buying yourself one of these BeerTenders so close to Christmas is “not in the holiday spirit,” which is clearly a serious problem for many people. The BeerFriender offers a solution: you buy the BeerTender, and the app matches you up with someone else so you can send it to each other. So really, you’re buying yourself a selfish gift, but making it look like it’s a gift from someone else.
